The island of Spinalonga achieved sad fame as a leprosy island until 1957. Today, you can take a ferry from the mainland to the uninhabited island in a few minutes and walk through the old walls and the abandoned town. Spinalonga was one of the last leper colonies in Europe and the island fell into oblivion after its dissolution until it was rediscovered. In the meantime, however, it is even being considered to declare Spinalonga a World Heritage Site.
